I really love this book by Aniita Hill 。 It really is a well written compelling read that really makes you think and raises questions。 This book has me signing petitions on things like repealing certian supreme court decisions , taking the caps off of the amounts given to plantiffs by the courts in court decisons , getting rid of the statuate of limitations on cases where there is evidence of compliant after compliant filed against a certian person or organization or group ; giving whistle blowe I really love this book by Aniita Hill 。 It really is a well written compelling read that really makes you think and raises questions。 This book has me signing petitions on things like repealing certian supreme court decisions , taking the caps off of the amounts given to plantiffs by the courts in court decisons , getting rid of the statuate of limitations on cases where there is evidence of compliant after compliant filed against a certian person or organization or group ; giving whistle blower protections to people who come forward about abuses, giving a compliant review process for cases where politicans are accused of wrong doing and for service workers and migrant workers, making it so in cases where there is evidence of various compliants of abuse , making it so public funds are used to persue cases by public attorneys in the public interest, making it so people found guilty of wrongdoing have to reimburse the government for money they spent on these cases , getting rid of arbitation in contracts and banning the use of nondisclosure agreements in cases of criminal offences , also making it so allegations of abuse in schools is immedately investigated by a outside source。 This book will have you asking what you can do to end gender violence as one of our most impoatant probelms。 。。。more

Excellent! Her view is that anger is not enough to change attitudes -- she's right。 New definitions of gender are required and old attitudes must fall。 Excellent! My respect for Anita Hill only grows。 She is a woman of deep intellect and great honor who truly seeks to make our world a better place。

Important book to read to get a perspective of gender, race and sexual politics from the viewpoint of a pioneer in the field。 Her long career as a law professor, teaching courses in gender and race law and politics, places her in a position to see and analyze gender violence。 At a time when there were few women and people of color practicing and teaching law, she took on the role as an advocate for people enduring abuses of power from supervisors and other people in positions of control。 Her tes Important book to read to get a perspective of gender, race and sexual politics from the viewpoint of a pioneer in the field。 Her long career as a law professor, teaching courses in gender and race law and politics, places her in a position to see and analyze gender violence。 At a time when there were few women and people of color practicing and teaching law, she took on the role as an advocate for people enduring abuses of power from supervisors and other people in positions of control。 Her testimony in the Supreme Court nomination of Clarence Thomas in 1991(?) was an example of standing against the power abuse she experienced working for Thomas, and the impact of his unwanted sexual advances on her career。In pointing out the difficult choices in staying in a job that secures income and career advancement while suffering the discomforts of harassment, she received backlash from many directions。 The backlash ranged from diminishing Thomas's behavior as "not that bad", to accusing Anita Hill of being a traitor in calling out a brother for his bad behavior。Many examples of how our culture protects abusers when they are in positions of power are given in this book, including the coaches, clergy, academic and business institutions that did not act on reported abuses in order to protect reputations of the abusers, therefore the reputation of the institutions the abusers represented。 Stories of people from all walks of life who have suffered abuse from those in positions of higher ranking are also included and examine the reasons people remain quiet, out of fear, shame, insecurity, etc。The Thirty-Year Journey proceeds to the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation to the Supreme Court, where history repeats itself and Christine Blasey Ford testifies to being raped by Kavanaugh as a teenager, and how her statements are dismissed as attempts to tarnish his reputation。 The placement of Kavanaugh in a position that literally controls the highest federal laws that oversee our rights and protections shows little progress in the higher levels of government to address gender, race, and other inequalities。 The book was written before the overturning of Roe vs Wade, (the case, which guaranteed the federal rights of women to choose whether or not to give birth), so this example of wielding gender power was not included。 However, the message to speak up and take actions at local levels to protect against gender violence violations is stated by a woman who did just that and is continuing to build a legacy for those working towards the goal of ending gender violence。 。。。more

A very good read。

Anita Hill conveys the ways in which sexual violence is a public crisis at the systemic level, not an issue to be dealt with on case by case or individual level。 A difficult and important read。

Diana

A good history of the battle for gender equality and anti-gender bias。 Not very analytical about what is at the heart of gender discrimination, rails against gender violence but does not show a clear path to fighting it。 Does not really look at gender misconduct and the extent to which it should disqualify one for public office。

Rolf

A comprehensive yet accessible study of the legal framework intended to prevent gender violence (and how often it fails)。

It's impossible to rate this book on a traditional scale。 Given the subject matter and the disturbing details, I can't say I enjoyed it。 It did make me think, though I prefer to keep those thoughts to myself for now。 I would call this book (and any others like it) significant and worthy of mass attention。 It's impossible to rate this book on a traditional scale。 Given the subject matter and the disturbing details, I can't say I enjoyed it。 It did make me think, though I prefer to keep those thoughts to myself for now。 I would call this book (and any others like it) significant and worthy of mass attention。 。。。more

while i was interested in reading about anita hill's experience and her ideas to end gender-based violence i couldn't help but feel that they were all constrained by the shackles of liberalism。 for instance, she dedicates a chapter on the intersections of gender-based violence that occur among black and native women, but then brings up sexual harassment in the military as a national security issue when the US military (female members included) has arguably caused the greatest amount of damage to while i was interested in reading about anita hill's experience and her ideas to end gender-based violence i couldn't help but feel that they were all constrained by the shackles of liberalism。 for instance, she dedicates a chapter on the intersections of gender-based violence that occur among black and native women, but then brings up sexual harassment in the military as a national security issue when the US military (female members included) has arguably caused the greatest amount of damage to black and native women to date。 therefore, her analysis would have been more effective through a socialist lens。 still a good read overall, though。 。。。more

This is an excellently researched and written account of gender violence in America, bolstered by Hill's academic bona fides and personal history。 That being said, I'm not sure of its intended audience。 For people familiar with / sympathetic to its ideas, there isn't much new to learn from its pages。 For those who aren't, I'm not sure that they'd be receptive to picking it up。 Nevertheless, this book's accessibility belies its deep scholarship, and I admire Hill for offering a systematic compreh This is an excellently researched and written account of gender violence in America, bolstered by Hill's academic bona fides and personal history。 That being said, I'm not sure of its intended audience。 For people familiar with / sympathetic to its ideas, there isn't much new to learn from its pages。 For those who aren't, I'm not sure that they'd be receptive to picking it up。 Nevertheless, this book's accessibility belies its deep scholarship, and I admire Hill for offering a systematic comprehensive account of what she has spent much of her career researching。 。。。more

Not a memoir, like I thought it would be, but an analysis of gender-based violence and inequality in the U。S。。 Hard to listen to due to the subject matter, but thorough, stirring, infuriating, and distressing。

Took awhile to get through this book because there’s a lot of important, insightful tidbits。 A little devastating to see how little has changed in regards to gender violence

Being an older woman and a feminist i remember Anita Hill courageous testimony about Clarence Thomas who was 30 y ago trying to get on as a Supreme Court justice and she had evidence to the contrary that he was a sexual harasser and abuser when Anita worked for him。 Her testimony was disregarded and he won。 Nothing can remove him while he lives。 He was the first of two men vying for a seat and accused by women and each time the man is believed as innocent as a victim and the women were accused o Being an older woman and a feminist i remember Anita Hill courageous testimony about Clarence Thomas who was 30 y ago trying to get on as a Supreme Court justice and she had evidence to the contrary that he was a sexual harasser and abuser when Anita worked for him。 Her testimony was disregarded and he won。 Nothing can remove him while he lives。 He was the first of two men vying for a seat and accused by women and each time the man is believed as innocent as a victim and the women were accused of something neither deserved。 For these two women Anita Hill and Dr Ford they were walking into a swampland of hatred and protection of male supremacy and right for men to treat women however it behooves them to do to retain their places of power This writing by Dr Anita Hill is her expression of and need to alter the condition here called gender violence。 It is to this reader who is a woman and has been affected by gender violence a tragedy that in many ways nothing has changed。 I admire Anita Hill and what is so remarkable is that she is able to move on from what happened in 1995。。 yet she is unwilling to back maintaining the status quo。 And also as a black woman she is seeking awareness and change of systemic racism。。。。Judy g 。。。more

We all owe a debt to Anita Hill, it got the conversation started。 This book was not just about her struggle, but gender discrimination in the workplace, unequal pay, domestic violence, and so much more。 We have to keep striving for gender equality。

Very depressing look at the (lack of) progress in dealing with gender violence and abuse since Anita HIll's testimony at the Clarence Thomas SCOTUS hearings before the Senate。 She also brought up Dr Christine Blasey Ford's testimony at Brett Kavanaugh's hearing, showing how little has changed, even with the increase in women in the Senate and the House。It was well written。 but the grim nature of her subject, and the lack of progress in thtis issue was quite depressing for me to read。 Very depressing look at the (lack of) progress in dealing with gender violence and abuse since Anita HIll's testimony at the Clarence Thomas SCOTUS hearings before the Senate。 She also brought up Dr Christine Blasey Ford's testimony at Brett Kavanaugh's hearing, showing how little has changed, even with the increase in women in the Senate and the House。It was well written。 but the grim nature of her subject, and the lack of progress in thtis issue was quite depressing for me to read。 。。。more

Solid presentation of facts in support of a major problem that we are failing to either address or solve。 Unfortunately the problem is so old and so well established in the power structure of our society that the excuses are well worn and broadly accepted…even when they are clearly shown to be invalid, dysfunctional and cruel。

Sanchita

Good, fast read, but despite the premise, the intersectional analysis was sorely lacking。

Really hard to read book。 Not much has changed in over 30 years。 Early parts of the book are a mixture of dry, historical stuff that is known and stories that are uncomfortable。 Later it's just so depressing to realize that even the recent MeToo movement didn't move our country enough。 She ends with a prescription for progress, but ignores that things are getting much worse currently with women under attack in red states' legislatures。 Really hard to read book。 Not much has changed in over 30 years。 Early parts of the book are a mixture of dry, historical stuff that is known and stories that are uncomfortable。 Later it's just so depressing to realize that even the recent MeToo movement didn't move our country enough。 She ends with a prescription for progress, but ignores that things are getting much worse currently with women under attack in red states' legislatures。 。。。more

Ultimately, I found this book to be very informative and a powerful call to action to prioritize systemically addressing gender-based violence throughout American society as well as the need to recognize the intersectionality of its roots。 While sections of this book can be very dry, Hill does add in valuable reflections and antecedents of her thirty years of researching, advocating, and proposing solutions to this multi-faceted problem。

Wow! What a powerful read!
